INTEGRITY COMMISSION BILL BELATED BUT WELCOME STEP FORWARD
Will Be Examined in Detail

The Tasmanian Greens today welcomed the tabling of government legislation to establish a State Integrity Commission as a “belated but welcome” step forward.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP, who was on the Parliamentary Committee which recommended an Integrity Commission be established, said that it is clear that a looming election is the best motivation to encourage governments to act in the community’s best interests.
“The Integrity Commission would already be up and running if this government had not continually voted it down over a period of many years,” Mr McKim said.
“The Greens have been driving for years the campaign to have an independent integrity commission style body established in Tasmania, and to finally witness legislation being tabled vindicates the hard work put into making this an eventuality.”
Mr McKim said that the Greens continue to offer in-principle support for an Integrity Commission.
We will be scrutinising the proposed legislation in detail and are hopeful that the Government is prepared to “accept any amendments necessary to ensure that this long-awaited body is as effective as possible.”
