As Bartlett Faces Teachers Revolt

The Tasmanian Greens today again demanded that Premier David Bartlett immediately commission an independent expert review of his Post Year 10 reforms, following the AEU President’s endorsement of reviewing the Tasmania Tomorrow restructures.

Greens Leader and Education spokesperson Nick McKim MP said that the ongoing crisis is a test of Mr Bartlett’s capacity as a leader, and that the Minister must now take stock and listen to the feedback from those at the coalface who are struggling to implement his reforms.

“For months now, the Greens have suggested that the Premier commissions an independent expert review of his post year 10 reforms, to establish whether these changes can be improved and if so how, where they have gone wrong, and what if anything can be salvaged,” Mr McKim said.

“David Bartlett cannot continue to turn a deaf ear to the serious and growing discontent from teachers, parents and students in the post year 10 sector, to do so is a critical failure in leadership.”

“Education is key for current and future generations, and it is incomprehensible that the Premier and Education Minister appears to be taking such a belligerent and uncompromising stance over something that is so crucial for us to get right.”

“What has David Bartlett got to lose from holding an independent expert review into his reforms? It would demonstrate a capacity to listen, to take stock, and a willingness to learn from mistakes which are all hallmarks of a real leader.”

“Tasmanian teachers, parents and students do not need more spin. They need an independent expert review.”

Mr McKim also reiterated the Greens’ position that no colleges should be forced by the government to enter the Tasmania Tomorrow restructure.
