I remain unconvinced the woodchip piles are safe

Posted on

The F.S.C is organised into three chambers to ensure that all stakeholder groups involved in or affected by forestry practices are able to contribute towards developing appropriate standards for the industry. These three chambers are commercial, environmental and social (or community).
Community members of the F.S.C. are concerned with matters including potential adverse health and social effects of forestry operations and with equitable use of publically owned natural resources.

My experience following raising concerns about potential health risks associated with the woodchip piles on Burnie wharf in 2002 would indicate that Gunns could learn a lot more about the F.S.C. approach which upholds the precautionary principle and values community input.

I fully accept that I should have approached the company directly with my concerns prior to presenting them in the media.

I remain unconvinced that the woodchip piles are safe and I look forward to further independent investigation of the site and the results being made available to the public.
