The Tasmanian Greens today threw their support behind the call by Richard Bovill for a boycott of the Pura milk brand, in a bid to send a message to parent company National Foods.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said that the power of consumer boycotts can be a key motivating factor to get big business to change immoral or unethical behaviour, and that National Foods is guilty of both when it comes to its treatment of Tasmania’s dairy farmers.
“The Greens support the farmers’ call for a consumer boycott on Pura milk products, if that is going to get the attention of National Foods and force them to give our dairy farmers a fair go,” Mr McKim said.
“National Foods are abusing their position in having effective control of the Tasmanian milk market, and they are gouging Tasmanian farmers. This is unethical and unfair.”
“The power of the consumer should not be underestimated. Consumer movements have driven significant change in the way companies behave globally, and getting involved in a consumer boycott movement is the single most effective thing that concerned Tasmanians can do to send a loud message to National Foods.”
“National Foods will re-evaluate its priorities once its products start to rot on supermarket shelves. They will have to re-evaluate if Tasmanians choose to exercise their purchasing power.”
