Flinders Island shipping crisis
The State Government must provide to the Flinders Council the legal advice it has received that it is using to say it cannot intervene in the dispute between the crew of the Matthew Flinders and the management of Southern Shipping.
As Infrastructure Minister Graeme Sturges says he has Crown Law advice, he needs to show courtesy to the Council and provide it to them.
I have contacted the office of the Workplace Relations Minister Lisa Singh and have been assured that the Director of Workplace Standards will today contact the master of the Matthew Flinders about occupational health and safety issues the crew have raised.
The Infrastructure Minister, Mr Sturges, should ensure that officers from MAST also contact the crew, in case the safety issues relate to the marine operation of the vessel itself.
The State Government have got to do more than stand idly by.
A reliable shipping service is essential not only to the economic development of the Furneaux Group, but also to the livelihood of the people who live and work there.
