Alderman Elise Archer (who is also a Liberal candidate in Denison for the March 2010 State Election) will move the following motion at the Council meeting today (commencing at 5pm):

“That a report be prepared on Council’s involvement in Mental Health Week in 2010 and to assist those with a mental health disorder or illness generally, as part of its policy on social inclusion and equal access.”

Ald Elise Archer says that “Given it was Mental Health Week this month, it is my view Council should explore what assistance it can provide, ‘in kind’ or otherwise, to the events that form part of Mental Health Week next year and into future years.”

“It would also be worthwhile investigating how else Council can assist the community with respect to the issue of mental health generally, within Council’s appropriate financial means and resources.”

“People with a mental health disorder or illness often have disabilities, or their condition can be equally disabling. People who come to Tasmania as refugees, often escaping violence, may also suffer from mental health issues as a consequence.”

“My proposal that Hobart City Council at least be part of Mental Health Week next year is consistent with Council’s existing policies on social inclusion and equal access, and it would be entirely appropriate for Council to have a role to play.”

“The Council works across a broad range of projects in the area classified as ‘community development’, offering many benefits for the community in such areas as cultural diversity, equal access, community safety, children, youth programs, 50 & Better Centre for older people, and large scale and small scale events. Its tasks include:

Running support and social action groups;
Building community networks;
Participating in inter-agency meetings;
Offering community, cultural and major event grants;
Working towards social justice;
Empowering individuals and communities”, says Ald Elise Archer.
