Bleak days at Cape Grim as beef bashed
Cape Grim Beef, the high-grade product of local company Greenham, is GM-free, hormone-free, antibiotic-free and fed entirely on non-irrigated pasture.
The jet black Angus cattle are raised by 250 small-scale farmers, while Cape Grim itself officially has the world’s cleanest air and rainwater.
No wonder, then, that in just two years the product has grown into a premium-brand success — coveted by top chefs in Sydney and Melbourne and featured by restaurants in Japan and supermarkets in Korea. But there are worrying signs ahead for Greenham, its suppliers and other beef producers around the country.
Regardless of if or when agriculture is pushed into the Rudd government’s Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme, a campaign is under way to persuade Australians to eat less meat to reduce greenhouse emissions.
