According to the law: Construction of the Pulp Mill has begun!
Pulp Mill Permit (extracts):
(planning): “construction activity means an activity on the land associated with the construction phase of the activity (which includes vegetation clearance, road construction, related infrastructure and rehabilitation);”
(environmental): “construction activities means activities on or in the terrestrial or marine environment associated with the construction phase of the activity, including but not limited to, activities associated with the clearance of vegetation, site works to create a level site, blasting, pile driving, backhoe dredging, rock breaking, rock crushing, road construction, associated infrastructure installation, installation of fences, plant and building construction and installation”;
KIM BOOTH said the Pulp Mill Still Lacks Finance, Permission to Operate, Full Pipeline Access, and a Social Licence:
An extract: The Tasmanian Greens today described Gunns Ltd’s decision to begin clearing an area of public reserve inside the Trevallyn Nature Recreation Area as an obscene charade, given that Gunns have no finance for their pulp mill project, no access for their pipeline, no federal permission to dump effluent in Bass Strait, and no social licence to build their toxic and divisive pulp mill.
Greens Pulp Mill spokesperson Kim Booth MP said the Labor and Liberal parties, who voted to excise part of the Trevallyn Nature Recreation Area in 2007 on Gunns’ behalf, should hang their heads in shame as the chainsaws move onto land that should still be a public reserve. People NOT Pulp Mill Pipeline Community Picnic
WHAT: Community Picnic
WHEN: 12noon-2pm Sunday 6th September
WHERE: Trevallyn Reserve, Reatta Rd, Trevallyn on the Village Green adjacent to the Hoo Hoo Hut
RECLAIM OUR RESERVE
TAP Into A Better Tasmania will hold a Community Picnic at Trevallyn Reserve on September 6th. All Tasmanians are invited to come along and tell Gunns and the State Government that the Reserve belongs to the people and the people are resolved to defend their property.
“The Reserve is owned by the public, not Gunns”, said TAP spokesperson Bob McMahon.
“The community is disgusted that Gunns has been allowed to vandalise a public recreational reserve for a project that has no certainty of ever being built.
“Gunns land clearing at the Reserve and down the East Tamar is a last ditch attempt to convince some potential financier or Joint Venture Partner that the pulp mill project is a goer, that it is “investment ready.
“If this was a reputable business it would have attracted reputable finance. It hasn’t. Australian banks won’t touch it. Gunns has been trolling the world for years with cap in hand looking for a fantasy investor.
“The land clearing is a gigantic con at Tasmania’s expense”, concluded McMahon.
The organizers are not expecting any trouble from Gunns or its supporters.
Guest speakers include Peter Cundall, students Kaeo Landon-Lane and Leila McMahon-Kunta, Bass MP Kim Booth, Paul Oosting from TWS and Trevallyn resident and Launceston City Councillor, Jeremy Ball.
Local musicians will provide entertainment.
