Kingston Bypass: Stop this act of stupidity
The December Climate Conference in Copenhagen comes to Kingborough early this year in the form of the Development Application for the Kingston Bypass.
On 14th September 2009 the Kingborough Council Planning Committee has the opportunity to consider the climate impact of the Kingston Bypass but must do so in a vacuum of regulatory, expert and political direction in advance of the Climate Summit.
The planning report to the Committee will be publicly available on the Kingborough Council website on Thursday 10 September 2009.
There has never been a climate impact assessment for the Kingston Bypass yet the climate impact is huge. At this pivotal time in history, sustainable transport initiatives are vital for the future of Kingborough, but the Government’s Fiscal Stimulus is a $40m poison apple to extend the Kingborough commuter nightmare.
Commuter travel times to Hobart and beyond will not improve. Even worse, the Kingston Bypass will crush sustainable transport initiatives for years.
The Climate Summit warning to the world this Christmas will be blunt; “Change course or die”. The choice facing Kingborough Councillors next Monday will be no less confronting.
Write a letter to the paper or contact a Kingborough Councillor and ask him/her whether they have heard about the Copenhagen Climate Conference and ask them to VOTE NO to the Kingston Bypass.
Public Meeting
We have organised the public meeting to gauge what public support there might be for a sustainable transport voice in Tasmania. The Kingston Bypass is merely one more unsustainable act of sustained stupidity in the Age of Stupid that we find ourselves in.
