Jane # 28 ( Here ) 1080 is used widely in NZ to control possums that are considered to be a vector for Bovine tuberculosis.

That is the main excuse on possums but it is also extensively used to poison deer and other “pests”
Deer are mainly poisoned with a 1080 paste spread onto the leaves of low trees and it very, very effective on deer used this way.

New Zealand and Australia use 94% of the world production of 1080.
As rita skeeter claims in # 27 Tasmania used last year 5 kg of 1080…at a 0.14% solution that will make a lot of browsing animal baits.

On the subject of regulation…what about the hundreds of thousands of 1080 fox baits that are not included in these figures?

The 2005 legislation on 1080 being used on public lands or state forests exempts the activities of the fox eradication program.

I have a camera full of images of 1080 fox bait signs in state forest and forestry Tasmania managed lands.

Brodifacoum was also widely used in NZ but it is now illegal to aerial bait there since the maoris strongly opposed the usage of brodifacoum on their traditional hunting grounds.

Strangely enough brodifacoum is not to be used in outdoor applications according to the UNESCO environment regulations and the World Health Organisation. These two bodies also require ALL the poisoned carcasses to be retrieved and burnt or buried.

Tasmania, however, is going to aerial bait Macquarie Island with 296 tonnes of it next winter (2010) and one could imagine all the rodent and rabbit carcasses being retrieved ?
