The Search For The Sydney: How Australia’s Greatest Maritime Mystery Was Solved

“We’ve found the Sydney. We’ve got it. It’s absolutely crystal clear…there’s no doubt about it”

For 66 years the location of the wreck of the HMAS Sydney haunted military historians and civilians alike – until last year when it was discovered after a six year search.

The leader of the search, David L Mearns will be at Fullers Bookshop on Sunday August 23rd at 2pm to talk about the search and his book The Search For The Sydney.’ (Harper Collins 2009).

This book is important not only because of the author’s involvement with the subject but also because it is the only one that has been published about the actual search and discovery of the wreck of the HMAS Sydney.

The HMAS Sydney was considered the pride of Australia’s fleet and it was sunk following and fierce and unprecedented naval battle with the German HSK Kormoran by on 19 November 1941.

All 645 of the Sydney’s crew were lost and 79 men from the Kormoran also perished.

Mearns, a US-born marine scientist, researcher and deep-sea shipwreck hunter has found and filmed some of the world’s most famous, dangerous and notorious shipwrecks – including some that experts claimed would never be found…including the enigmatic HMAS Sydney
