Wellbeing Focus of Yoga Open Day

MEDIA ALERT

A local yoga centre will be throwing its doors open to the public soon. Hobart Yoga and Meditation Centre will hold a free Open Day on Saturday July 11th.
“People often think they can’t do yoga because they’re not flexible enough, but it’s not like that at all.” HYMC manager, Helen Cushing says. “We have students in their 70s! They enjoy the postures, but our students also get a lot out of the relaxation techniques that are a very important part of this style of yoga. This Open Day will feature free classes, so people can try it all out.”

While HYMC is thriving now, it has had a lot to contend with in recent times. “Less than 18 months ago our Centre – which is not-for-profit – was told it had to find new premises. For a while we were facing closure – but thanks to great community support we’re thriving: 2009 has been our busiest year yet. We have well over 150 regular students and the only comprehensive yoga program in the country for Vietnam Veterans.” Ms Cushing says.

Vietnam Veteran and long-term HYMC student, John Las, says yoga has changed his life. “Yoga definitely helps me feel calmer and more positive,” he says. “Recently I had a shoulder operation and the yoga helped me cope with that. My wife has really noticed the difference in me – she has taken up yoga too!”

At the Open Day, local general practitioner and HYMC teacher, Dr Katie Pullinger will speak on the role of yoga in stress management. “So many people these days are suffering from the effects of stress. Their bodies get tense; their breath gets fast and shallow. Their mood starts to be affected. I feel yoga offers some practical tools to help. Things like learning to slow your breath down when you’re anxious can make all the difference. This style of yoga is very safe and straightforward. I feel it’s appropriate for most people – the emphasis is on caring for the whole person, not on looking good in a leotard,” Dr Pullinger says.

The Open Day will feature free yoga, relaxation and meditation sessions suitable for beginners, a yoga demonstration, free chai, special yoga offers, information and a vegetarian barbecue. It will take place at Hobart Yoga and Meditation Centre, 4 St John’s Ave, New Town, from 10am – 3.30pm on Saturday July 11th. Admission is free and all are welcome.
