The Tasmanian Government has conceded the number of homeless people in the state is rising. A study from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology shows Tasmania had more than 2,500 homeless people when the 2006 Census was taken. That equates to about 53 homeless people for every 10,000 people, which is higher than New South Wales and Victoria. It is a 62 per cent increase on the last figures taken in 2001. The Health and Human Services Minister, Lin Thorp, says the government has to dig deeper to help homeless people. Read more here
