Last night’s rally confirms that the North East community is as committed as ever to seeing a resolution to the suspension of Dr McGinity.

Yet again I saw firsthand the level of frustration and anger in the community and this situation needs to be cleared up as soon as possible.

The North East community shouldn’t have to call public meeting after public meeting just to get the Government to focus on ensuring that there are appropriate health services in the area.

What is clear is that the Tasmanian Medical Council investigation needs to be expedited so that the community and Dr McGinity can put this ugly mess behind them and move forward.

This whole affair has had a terrible impact on Dr McGinity, the North East community and on health services. We need to make sure that as a community we learn a lesson from this and make sure it never happens again.

The Tasmanian Medical Council has an important role to play in ensuring that our medical practitioners meet high standards.

However, what this saga has shown us is that there may be a problem with the processes that are in place at the moment.

The Tasmanian Liberals will move a motion in Parliament calling for the McGinity affair to be reviewed by a Joint Select Committee comprising of members from both the House of Assembly and the Legislative Council.
