Tributes are being paid to one of Tasmania’s most respected journalists, Keith Welsh. Mr Welsh died on Sunday aged 103.
Mr Welsh was the sports editor at the Mercury newspaper and the annual Keith Welsh Award is Tasmania’s top journalism prize.

Former colleague Wayne Crawford says he always took young reporters under his wing.

“He had a great depth of knowledge of journalism having been in the trade for decades and he wanted to pass it on to his colleagues which he did, his younger colleagues,” he said.

His great nephew Richard Welsh says he was always more eager to talk about other people and events than himself.

“That never changed.”

“He was always interested in other people and whether that was the journalist in him coming out in his 11th decade, but he was certainly a very endearing person and everyone I ever met that knew him shared those thoughts,” he said.
