PRESS RELEASE
Scott McLean today announced that he would seek ALP pre-selection for the electorate of Bass at the next State election.
Mr. McLean is the State Secretary of the CFMEU Forestry and Forestry Products Division. He was born in Launceston and lived in Bass for almost his entire life.
“Keeping jobs, and creating new jobs will be the focus of my campaign,” Mr. McLean said.
“I never again want to see our brightest and best have to leave the State because of a lack of work.”
Mr. McLean said that there had been speculation for some months about his intention to seek pre-selection, but that his decision to run had only been made earlier this week after discussions with the CFMEU Forestry and Furnishing Products Division State Committee of Management and the National Executive of the union.
“Bass deserves dedicated and strong representation and if elected I will work as hard as I can to be an advocate for all the people of Bass.”
“It’s well known that I am a strong supporter of a world class pulp mill for this area and I will not waver from that support. What is not so well known is that I support downstream processing because it keeps jobs here in Bass, and creates new jobs in a time of economic uncertainty.”
Mr. McLean is well known for his vigorous support of forestry workers and the forestry industry and has also served on a number of community boards and organisations. He has strong links with many sectors of the community through that work.
“Bass needs a strong candidate who will work hard to improve the social and economic conditions for the whole electorate,” Mr. McLean said.
“I’ve spent my working life fighting for the rights of workers across the State, and now think that it’s time to put all my energy into getting the best results for all the people of Bass.”
