Don’t Miss: The Burning Season
Dr NIALL DORAN
The BookEnd program is hosting a national documentary launch to be held at the Wrest Point Convention Centre in Hobart on the evening of Monday June 1. The documentary is called “The Burning Season”, and is about positive and innovative solutions to carbon pollution and habitat clearance in Indonesia.
It follows the work of a young Australian entrepreneur who is both undertaking good environmental work and using it to generate income. There are parallels with issues in Tasmania, and key messages about building career options and positive ways forward, rather than dwelling on the divisive debates that have damaged Tasmania for so long.
The documentary is winning substantial international attention and awards. It is narrated by Hugh Jackman, and features Arnold Schwarzenneger. It was invited to Robert De Niro’s Tribeca Film Festival in New York for its global premiere last month, and its director, Cathy Henkel (a BookEnd patron), is bringing it to Tasmania for its Australian launch before taking it to other States.
The launch will be a major event, attended by guests including Terri Irwin (who also features in the film), the film-makers, and Dorjee Sun, the entrepreneur featured in the film. The night will be hosted by Andy Muirhead (another BookEnd patron), with a post screening forum on the making of the film and the potential to build a new environmental economy that combines profit and good on-ground works. The forum aims to focus on the role of environmental entrepreneurs in building careers and adding to the economy. I would also hope that this discussion looks at opportunities for addressing issues in a range of environments from forest to marine.
Entry is FREE (with optional gold coin donation) PROVIDED people RSVP before the night (so we know the numbers we are dealing with). People can RSVP to info@bookendtrust.com or to me on 0409 222 133.

Although the current event is being held in Hobart, we may be able to plan similar showings in the north of the State depending on interest.
BookEnd is an environmental scholarship program designed to help boost the interest of Tasmanian school students in furthering their education, and in developing positive and co-operative environmental solutions.
Best wishes,
