The smell of Tassie in autumn

Posted on

Bev Ernst Tuesday
WHEN I got up this morning, the air was fresh and clear from Hillwood looking across the Tamar, both north towards Greens Beach, south towards Launceston and over to the West, where the tiers looked beautiful.
Arriving home this afternoon at around 5.30 there was the smell of Tassie in Autumn in the air and as I walked through the house, opened the doors leading out to the front and a view of the beautiful Tamar Valley, I was assaulted by a view (or lack thereof) that causes me to become more angry and frustrated every year it goes on! As far as I can see and smell, there is only smoke, the entire valley is encased in the consequence of world’s best practice forestry!

If the wind is right, this smoke will be in Launceston tonight and tomorrow morning. It will be interesting to find out the air quality monitoring results of the next few days. Oh, forgot, these results aren’t made public.

I’ll be waiting for the Asthma foundation to tell me to stay indoors over the next few months rather than challenge the forestry practice that causes this unacceptable and unnecessary health hazard.
