Jobs go as Christchurch veneer plant closes

The reality of the harsh economic times has hit home for about 20 workers in Christchurch. Gunns Veneers, a Christchurch pine veneer products company, has announced it is to close on Friday after more than 40 years in business. Its Australian owner, Gunns Ltd, blamed the worldwide economic downturn. Timber division general manager Graham Stevenson said from Tasmania yesterday that orders had dropped dramatically in the past four to five months. “We’ve held on as long as we could but the solution doesn’t seem recoverable really,” he said.
