A GROUP of 15 forest defenders and members and members of the community have stopped roadwork operations in the Styx Valley of Giants this morning to highlight the ongoing destruction of Tasmania’s old growth forest ecosystems.

A tree sit has been erected suspending a protester fifty-two meters high in the logging coupe SX14C where ancient logs of huge dimensions have been sighted. This area is part of the pristine Styx catchment and has been untouched for centuries. Said Still Still Wild Still Threatened spokesperson Christo Mills.

It is proof that the Tasmanian Government is turning a blind eye on the irreversible damage to our ancient ecosystems and the giant trees that lie within.

It is a crime to allow monopolising timber giants such as Gunns Ltd and Forestry Tasmania to destroy our ancient old growth wilderness. There is strong community opposition to these crimes and to the desiccation of the natural wilderness of our future generations. Said Mr Mills

We are not the criminals for defending the pristine areas of nature locked away from us by Forestry Tasmania. We are merely representing the Tasmanian community’s disgust at these practices. Mr Mills Said

Still Wild Still Threatened is a grassroots community organisation campaigning for the immediate protection of Tasmania’s ancient forests and the creation of an equitable and environmentally sustainable forestry industry in Tasmania.
