The fox coldline
Judith King
After locating details on internet I reported the incident ten minutes after the siting to the 24hr Fox Taskforce hotline to hear a message that the line was unmanned. They called back 0730 Monday to say someone would be here by 0900. Noone attended or called. I phoned several times to be told they would attend. After 2 days had elapsed I phoned again to enquire what was going on and whether they were going to attend our property or not. An inspector finally arrived at 2.30pm the following Wed ie 3 days later and put the sniffer dog to work. The inspector stayed at his vehicle to ensure he did not influence the dog. The dog ran in several directions clearly on a trail. It arrived at the urine and sat immediately and would not move. The handler was still at his vehicle and said he was amazed as he didn’t think the location report would amount to anything as there have been no reports in this area. He said it was the strongest confirmation by the specially trained dog in the last 12 months. The inspector said that nearly all fox sitings occur within 30kms from a port and Bell Bay is 28kms from our home. We live 25kms from Bell Bay port so entry could have happened there. A poultry enthusiast 2 kms from us has had about 20 of his birds killed over the previous 6 weeks. He was interviewed by the Task Force inspector re the injuries sustained and the inspector confirmed they are most likely fox kills rather than any other predator. We saw the fox run off in the direction of this chap’s home. Read more, Comment here
