Peter Garrett … destroyer
Karl
Unlike our previous environment minister, Peter Garrett has achieved global prominence as a conservationist. As he personally ticks-off the permits for Gunns native forest-dependent pulp mill, its sobering to remember that this is the same man that participated in the song ‘Land’, protesting clear-felling in British Columbia.
The royalties from this song do not go to Garrett, but what about the song ‘River Runs Red’?
“So you cut all the tall trees down
You poisoned the sky and the sea
You’ve taken what’s good from the ground
But you left precious little for me”
Garrett’s old band Midnight Oil were inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame, on the strength of their musical activism in aid of environmental and indigenous causes. Garrett has never bothered to visit the Tamar Valley so he would not know that the pulp mill is opposed by the local Aboriginal custodians.
As an Australian that has seen Midnight Oil perform live and who now lives within the 10km ‘sacrifice zone’ of this polluting, corrupt monstrosity, I’d request Australians to ask themselves ‘is Peter Garrett an artistic fraud or is he a political fraud’?
I believe Garrett is a hypocrite and if he allows this compromised and outdated development to proceed then I will be lobbying for Midnight Oil to be dumped from the ARIA Hall Of Fame.
What Tasmania will be losing as a result of this pulp mill will be regretted for generations.
If Peter Garrett is capable of presiding over the removal of Tasmania’s ancient carbon sinks then he is capable of mining the Great Barrier Reef or breaking Ayers Rock up for road base.
Now is the time to expose ALP hypocrisy.
Peter Garrett has destroyed Midnight Oil’s international reputation.
