Prime Minister John Howard has refused to rule out welcoming his defecting Tasmanian Liberal candidate Ben Quin back to the party should he win the seat of Lyons as an independent. Mr Quin today quit the party in disgust over the federal government’s approval of Tasmania’s $1.7 billion pulp mill. Federal Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull gave final approval for the Gunns project on Thursday, subject to 48 conditions. He is now expected to run as an independent in Lyons, which is held by a slender 3.6 per cent by Labor’s Dick Adams. The seat of Lyons is adjacent to Bass, where the pulp mill is to be built.
