Mill: the decision

The fate of the controversial $1.7 billion pulp mill proposed for northern Tasmania will be known today. The Tasmanian Parliament approved the state’s largest private investment in August but the final ruling rests with the Federal Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull. He will announce his decision in Sydney, with the Commonwealth Chief Scientist Jim Peacock by his side. Mr Turnbull says he will follow Dr Peacock’s advice but has suggested there could be legal action from the mill developer Gunns, or the project’s opponents whatever decision he makes.
