Climate Change and Pulp Mill focus of Election
Up to 50 brightly coloured activists will today send a clear message at 3:00p.m.* to all the political parties at the upcoming federal election with a merry procession through Salamanca, the Elizabeth St Mall and the North Hobart Café strip. The young activists will be dressed suitable for extreme weather and will be holding fluorescent yellow umbrellas which when placed together spell out the message ‘Climate Change – Time for Action’.
According to Convenor of Environment Tasmania Phillip Pullinger:
The imperative to tackle climate change is the critical issue of this election. We have spent too long avoiding the need to sign up to Kyoto and to mandate deep cuts to our greenhouse gas emissions, whilst bushfires have ravaged our landscape and farmers are suffering from one of the worst droughts on record. This will be Australia’s first climate change election.
The procession through the streets of Hobart will be lead by Tasmania’s first environmental refugee, a Giant Polar Bear. The activists who will trail behind him will be dressed in an assortment of extreme weather clothing including wet weather gear, floaties, goggles and noodles, thongs, flippers and zinc cream as well as snorkels, hats, and swimming caps. Each protestor will also be carrying a yellow umbrella with a giant letter which, when placed together, will spell out their message.
Phillip Pullinger concluding:
In Tasmania, the protection of our carbon sinks in our globally recognised forests is absolutely critical. We can’t have credibility on the issue of climate change whilst propping up and approving a native forest fed pulp mill, and we can’t have credibility on climate change whilst we bulldoze and burn our Old-growth forests. These issues have to be addressed by all our pollies.
*The procession will be leaving Salamanca Lawns at 3:00p.m.
