The Artist: Ben Booth
The Place: Kelly’s Garden, Salamanca Place, Hobart
Exhibition On: Now until end of March
The Work: Ceramic, timber and polyurethane

Ben: It’s about David Hicks. It’s a comment on prisoners and isolation. It’s robotic because anyone imprisoned for a long time must become a bit of a robot. The face and hands tell the Willow Pattern Story which is about two young lovers who turned into swallows to escape an angry father. They were then trapped in those forms, forever ”nesting on the wing’, close but not intimate.
The gates in the convict built walls will be locked for the duration of the exhibition. The lone figure can be viewed from gaps in those gates or from Kelly Steps.
