The crowd estimated at 15,000 people gathered at Parliament House in Hobart to demonstrate support for the stadium project. Despite the wet weather, the turnout has been reported as substantial, with both The Guardian and Tasmania Police citing the attendance as significant given the conditions.

The crowd size has drawn inevitable comparisons to the anti-stadium rally held at the same location one week prior. While organisers of the “No Stadium” event estimated their attendance at 7,000, Tasmania Police provided a lower estimate of approximately 1,500 people.

“No New Stadium” spokesperson Roland Browne disputed the higher figures for Sunday’s rally, arguing the turnout was of a “similar size” to their own protest.

OUR PLACE HOBART RESPONDS TO YES TEAM YES STADIUM RALLY

Spokesperson Roland Browne said:

“A similar sized crowd to last week’s No Stadium rally at today’s Yes Team/Stadium rally only confirms what Tasmanians have always said – they want AFL/W teams.

“But every published poll shows the majority of Tasmanians also oppose the stadium because the only numbers that matter are the $2.5 billion plus stadium cost and the predicted $13 billion state debt.

“As shown by recent credit downgrades and more, it is clear Tasmania can afford neither”.
