Transitioning into Adulthood: Public Consultation Now Open

The Youth Network of Tasmania (YNOT) has recently released the Discussion Paper: Becoming an adult: the experience of young Tasmanians today for public consultation.

YNOT CEO, Tania Hunt said, “this public consultation process provides an opportunity for all Tasmanians to provide feedback on how we can better support young people to successfully transition into adulthood.”

“For many young people, the journey to adulthood is a double-sided coin. There are many positive aspects such as newfound freedoms, having choices and more opportunities, but on the flip side they are faced with new economic, social and legal responsibilities, and expectations that they don’t feel prepared for.”

There are about 50,000 young Tasmanians aged 18-25 years transitioning from adolescence to adulthood.

This discussion paper provides context as to what it’s like being a young person in today’s world, the five key markers of independence, the current service system and policy settings impacting young people, and opportunities for change. The paper has been informed by comprehensive statewide consultations with young people 18-25 years, community and government sectors and is underpinned by academic literature.

“Everyone’s pathway to adulthood is unique however, there were some distinct themes that emerged from youth consultations such as challenges living independently, obtaining financial independence, moving from school into the workforce, moving in and around communities and navigating a service system designed for adults.”

“Times have changed and the support young Tasmanians need to transition to adulthood and live independently in our communities needs to change, too.”

Members of the public are invited to directly respond to the key issues presented in the paper to inform the development of a whole of government Action Plan aligned with the Tasmanian Child and Youth Wellbeing Strategy: It takes a Tasmanian village.

The public consultation process will remain open until Tuesday 28 November 2023.

A shorter, youth friendly version of the Discussion paper has been produced to ensure young people have the opportunity to provide feedback and input into this important work.
