On a Week of Minority Government …
Media release – Josh Willie MLC, Shadow Minister for Sport, 19 May 2023
Premier must release details of AFL deal
It’s been one week since Premier Jeremy Rockliff’s government was plunged into minority.
The chaos that followed the resignation of John Tucker and Lara Alexander has seen the government face allegations even more Liberal MPs are threatening to quit over the bad stadium deal.
One week since Premier Rockliff’s own colleagues quit because they no longer had confidence in his leadership and nothing has changed.
The secret deal Premier Rockliff signed with the AFL remains secret.
The stadium mess that will cost Tasmanian taxpayers $1 billion is still infuriating the community.
And the Liberals still have the wrong priorities for this state.
It’s time for Premier Rockliff to come clean and release the secret deal with the AFL and show Tasmanians exactly what he has signed taxpayers up to.

After a week, Rockliff still has not secured confidence and supply
One week into the new weak, unstable, minority Liberal Government, Jeremy Rockliff still has not secured confidence and supply.
Speaking tonight on the ABC, both Mrs Alexander and Mr Tucker could not outline a single element of an agreement and repeatedly refused to offer confidence and supply.
This is the most unstable a Tasmanian Government has been in since the dying days of the Rundle Government. It will impact business confidence, jobs and the economy. It is a fundamental failure of Jeremy Rockliff’s leadership.
Mrs Alexander said she did not want to destabilise the government, but that is exactly what has happened.
It is now clearer than ever that Jeremy Rockliff must test confidence in his government as soon as the Parliament is recalled. If he is not confident enough to do that, he cannot remain as Premier.
Mr Tucker left the door open to rejoining the Liberal Party, but presumably that would only occur if Michael Ferguson becomes Premier.
The Tasmanian Liberal Government under Jeremy Rockliff has fallen apart. This is not the government Tasmanians thought they were electing.

It’s now a week since former Liberal MPs Lara Alexander and John Tucker quit their party, and forced the Rockliff Government into minority.
A week is a long time in politics, and it seems it’s been long enough for Premier Rockliff to stitch up an arrangement with the two new independents to avoid any Parliamentary problems.
As Ms Alexander and Mr Tucker said last Friday, Tasmanians deserve a transparent government working in their bests interests. Taking them at their word, we expect them to provide a comprehensive explanation to the public about what arrangements they’ve made with the Liberals.
