Restore Pedder Campaign Lobbying in Canberra
Media release – Lake Pedder Restoration Inc, 7 March 2023
From Paddling on the Pedder Impoundment to Federal Parliament; the message to Restore Pedder is gaining rapid momentum
“All across Australia from above the beach of lake Pedder itself to the Yarra, to Lake Burley Griffin, Bellinger, even as far as Lake Bender in the NT, people proudly paddled holding Restore Pedder banners aloft,” said Christine Milne AO, Convenor of Lake Pedder Restoration Inc.
Over the weekend of March 4-5th more than 100 supporters publicly called on the Australian Government to restore Tasmania’s iconic Lake Pedder ahead of proposed major works on two of the three impounding dams which are built on a fault line. Campaigners are in Canberra this week lobbying.
“The movement to restore lake Pedder is gaining momentum and this week in Canberra we will be building on that display of public support, lobbying the government and members of parliament to get behind nominating the restoration of Lake Pedder as Australia’s flagship project for the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration,” stated Ms Milne.
“At a time when restoring peat lands, moorlands, and addressing the loss of biodiversity is worldwide is front and centre, together with the movement to remove barriers and restore river systems, it is exactly the right to decommission the high risk impoundment dams and restore Lake Pedder.”
