Bridgewater Bridge to Close for Priority Repairs

Media release – Department of State Growth, 20 May 2022

Bridgewater Bridge to close for priority repairs next weekend

The Bridgewater Bridge will be closed to all traffic next weekend to allow for essential maintenance.

Both lanes on the bridge will close from 8:00 pm on Friday, 27 May to 6:00 am on Monday, 30 May 2022.

An engineering assessment has revealed that one of the bridge joints has deteriorated and there is damage to the road surface, supporting concrete and reinforcing.

A 40 km/h speed limit will remain in place until the longer-term works are complete.

A full closure of the bridge is required to access both lanes in order to undertake the repairs.

The bridge will then need to remain closed throughout Sunday to allow the concrete to set.

The bridge will be reopened once the repairs have been successfully completed and the concrete has set, which is expected to be by 6:00 am Monday, 30 May.

Detours will be available via the Bowen Bridge or Tasman Bridge for those travelling to or from Hobart, or via Boyer Road for those travelling from the north to New Norfolk. The Bowen Bridge detour will be available for light vehicles only.

Some public transport services may be affected during the closure, and you will need to check with your local provider for more information if you usually travel across the bridge.

We will continue to maintain the existing bridge to keep it safe and operational until the new Bridgewater Bridge is open to traffic in late 2024.

Further information on the closure, including detour maps, is available on the Transport website: www.transport.tas.gov.au/bridgewaterbridgeclosure.

We appreciate your patience and understanding while these essential repairs are completed.
