Media release – Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment, 1 September 2021
Consultation open to review Wildlife Regulations
The Tasmanian community and stakeholder groups are invited to make submissions on the State’s laws for the conservation, management and exhibition of our wildlife.
The current Wildlife Regulations are due to expire on 30 November 2021 and are now being remade as the Nature Conservation (Wildlife) Regulations 2021 and the Draft Nature Conservation (Deer Farming) Regulations 2021.
Stakeholder consultation was undertaken in 2020 which has informed the improvements that are reflected in the Draft Regulations.
The regulations, which are made under the Nature Conservation Act 2002, regulate the taking, possession and trading of wildlife, wildlife products, hunting, wildlife exhibition and display, and deer farming.
The Wildlife Regulations are necessary so that wildlife-related activities can be conducted appropriately, sustainably, and humanely.
While the intent of the regulations remains the same, the draft regulations have been updated to reflect contemporary wildlife management and to improve functionality and clarity.
Public consultation is a key part of the review process, and feedback from the Tasmanian public will be considered in finalising the regulations.
The four-week consultation period opens on 1 September 2021 and closes on 30 September 2021.
