Tasmanian disability advocates announce ndis co-design panel
Grassroots Tasmanian disability advocates, are calling for the NDIS to work more collaboratively with people who have lived experienced of NDIS.
After the Minister for the NDIS, Linda Reynolds pulled the plug on the controversial proposal to mandate Independent Assessments for NDIS participants last month, the group have organised a a panel discussion on NDIS co-design called ‘NDIS where do we go from here?’ to discuss how people with disability can offer their expertise to design a better and fairer NDIS.
The panel will run on Saturday 28 August, 10:00am, at Mathers House in Hobart, and will be streamed live on Facebook. The panel consisting of Tasmanian disability advocates are inviting members of the disability community, disability organisations and parliamentarians to come and ask questions and work together to develop a set of recommendations for how people access the NDIS.
Event organiser, Ana Pike said: “People with disability spend their whole lives being told what is good for them, so we applaud Minister Reynolds for giving us the chance to have some choice and control over our lives by inviting us to take part in co-design.”
Miss Pike encouraged all Tasmanians to get involved. “Finding the collective voice of people with disability on these issues matter, as we are stronger together. It’s important for our friends and allies to learn about these issues too, so everyone is welcome to tune in online. “
Group panellist, and Director of Policy and Programs at Women with Disabilities Australia, Heidi La Paglia, said: “Now that independent assessments are off the table, we have a chance to move forward together, to make the NDIS a better, fairer system that invests in people with disability as a unique and diverse group of individuals who have a variety of life experiences and lots to give.”
