Just Launched: A Year of Passionate Theatre, Diverse Writing and Great Performances
Jane Hamilton-Foster and Matt Stolp from Declan Greene’s ‘Eight Gigabytes of Hardcore Pornography’ to be performed at the Moonah Arts Centre, June 6-16, directed by Melissa King.
The Tasmanian Theatre Company has just launched its eleventh annual season – and
it promises to be one of the most diverse programs yet.
The 2018 season sees the world première of a new Tasmanian play, the Tasmanian
premieres of two new Australian plays and the Tasmanian premiere of an American
play.
The four works to be presented this year include a fun and frivolous exploration of
celebrity culture; a dark comedy about internet dating; an exploration of young
people’s responses to current issues; and a journey through the fight for equality in
our home state.
Artistic Director, Charles Parkinson is proud to showcase a diverse program of work
exploring some great writing by a group of exciting and talented artists.
“I think it important to offer a diverse program every year and
this year is possibly the most diverse ever. All manner of issues
are explored from the frivolous to the most serious. It is a
season that I hope will resonate for everyone – a season that
will entertain us all and give us cause to think about
contemporary dilemmas.”
Over its eleven years, the theatre company has produced work about contemporary
issues relevant to the Tasmanian community such as domestic violence, euthanasia,
the Tasmania health system, the Tasmanian justice system, post traumatic stress,
masculinity, bullying and the fate of literacy in the digital age.
The 2018 season follows a hugely successful season in 2017 for the Tasmanian
Theatre Company. Two of the four plays in 2017 program have been nominated for
the Tasmanian Theatre Awards – the Errols. Both ebaby and An Inconvenient Woman
have been nominated for Best Production as well as a host of other performance and
technical nominations; the company receiving 11 nominations in total for the
upcoming awards, to be presented this Saturday.
By the end of this year, the Tasmanian company will have presented 50 play seasons,
including 28 new plays, toured 6 times, commissioned 16 new plays, created 10 popup
theatres and worked with nearly 400 artists.
The Tasmanian Theatre Company’s eleventh performance season promises to be a
year of passionate theatre, wonderful writing and great performances.
