The Briefing … Jacinda Ardern’s offer to take Manus refugees
Good morning, and welcome to The Briefing.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has said she will repeat an offer to take some of Australia’s Manus Island refugees when she meets Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull in the Philippines this week.
Speaking at the APEC summit in Vietnam, Ardern said New Zealand had “a role to play” in ending the continuing standoff between refugees and Papua New Guinea authorities, saying “we don’t think what’s happening there is acceptable” and that New Zealand can “see the human face of this issue”. Ardern and Turnbull will meet with United States President Donald Trump at the annual gathering of East and South-East Asian leaders.
