Tasmanian unions call for 10 days paid FDV leave in the NES

Tasmanian unions call for 10 days paid family and domestic violence leave (FDV) in the National Employment Standards (NES).

Union and community members will be joined by State and Federal MPs and Senators (today) as they step up their campaign for 10 days paid family and domestic violence leave in the National Employment Standards (NES).

“We all know the horrific statistics about family and domestic violence,” says Unions Tasmania Secretary, Jessica Munday. “We know that, on average, one woman dies per week as a result of violence at home. But it’s more than just statistics. We’re talking about people, predominately women and children.”

“Access to paid family and domestic violence leave would mean someone escaping violence can do all the essential things they need to do to keep themselves safe. This includes relocating home or school, attending medical or legal appointments and court dates. We hear of women resigning from jobs or being terminated because their life at home makes it difficult for them to attend work. Having the financial means to escape a violent situation is also critical to successfully escaping family and domestic violence.”

“The National Employment Standards (NES) covers all employees in national workplaces, regardless of their employment contract. This is why paid family and domestic violence leave must be included in the NES. It would give all employees universal access to this important leave.”
