Small Island Wines launched at big event showcasing best of Tassie

Posted on

What started as a modest wine launch has evolved into a showcase of Tasmania’s best art, music, food and drink.

Like many things young winemaker James Broinowski puts his hand to, the launch event has grown organically, fueled by his passion for his home state and all that it is renowned for.

It all started in 2014 when Mr Broinowski crowd-funded to create his first vintage, and Small Island Wines was born.

It quickly developed into a juggernaut and each vintage since has sold out progressively quicker than the next.

For more than 10 years Mr Broinowski travelled the world learning about wine but all roads led him back to Tasmania.

Small Island Wines was recognised in Australian wine connoisseur James Halliday’s top 10 newest wineries for 2018, receiving 96 points for the 2015 Pinot and 95 points for the 2016 rose. The 2015 Pinot also received Gold at the Royal Hobart Wine Show.

“Tasmania is rife with young talent; artists, chefs, musicians, distillers and winemakers,” Mr Broinowski said.

“This event is a celebration of Tasmania’s talent, it will be raw, extremely unique and one hell of a party. There will be five exhibitions, food stalls so weird they could be confused as performance art, awesome music and the first chance to try the new release Small Island Wines”

The Release event will be held in Hobart’s newest event space, the Macquarie Point Goods Shed, which has previously hosted everything from Dark Mofo’s Dark Park to bridal fairs and heavy metal gigs.

The event will see the release of 2016 Small Island Pinot Noir and 2017 Small Island Rose and Riesling, the first time these wines will be available for purchase. Pre-release sales to local restaurants and bars have already been strong.

Mr Broinowski has curated a collection of some of Tasmania’s best established and up-and-coming artists, showcasing a range of portraiture, drawing, painting and even collage.

One of Tasmania’s most loved live acts Ruben Reeves and band will provide entertainment along with a diverse line-up of music and performers.

And, of course, it wouldn’t be a showcase of Tassie’s best without food, including fresh local seafood.

This unique, one-of-a-kind event will be a celebration of all of Tasmanian’s strengths and a culmination of years of hard work from Mr Broinowski.
