L’ton internet service complaints soar under Turnbull’s NBN

Posted on

Federal Member for Bass Ross Hart has slammed the Turnbull Government’s second rate NBN following the release of the latest Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) report.

The report revealed;

• There has been a 160% increase in complaints to the TIO
• Launceston has the most number of complaints in Tasmania
• There are 4 times more complaints made about the telecommunications industry than the banking/finance industry

“This report is a damning indictment on the Federal Liberal Government. Complaints about slow data speeds and homes left without useable internet or landline connections have skyrocketed.

“The true level of service failure is likely to be far greater than what is contained within the TIO report as most complaints are made to service providers, before reaching the TIO.

“It’s just not good enough that in a country like Australia you have businesses that rely on telecommunications services to sustain their operation suffering from failures.

“We’ve seen a prime example of service failure in Launceston just this weekend with the unacceptable outage of services faced by Wiseguise Pizza, local entrepreneurs that need a reliable connection.

“We also know that vulnerable people, like our elderly, rely on the connection provided by telecommunications providers for a range of things – including lifesaving medical services.

“This report is a wake-up call to the Liberals – it’s time to fix their NBN debacle.

Labor repeats its calls for the TIO to be given expanded powers in order to manage this burgeoning consumer crisis.
