Liberals vote against a code of conduct for politicians
Labor pushing for a single code of conduct for MPs
Liberals ignoring recommendations from the Integrity Commission
Tasmanians will be asking what the Liberal Government has got to hide with today’s vote against the introduction of a single code of conduct for Members of Parliament.
“After dragging his feet for more than three years, the Premier, Will Hodgman, today effectively killed off the chance of introducing a code in the current Parliamentary term,” Shadow Attorney-General Lara Giddings said.
“That’s despite clear recommendations from the Integrity Commission and pleas from the Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Integrity.
“It is little wonder the Premier has been so reluctant to introduce a strong code of conduct when he has had so many members behaving badly.
“The Premier is so disinterested in this issue that he appeared oblivious to a recommendation of the Joint Select Committee on Integrity to allow the Integrity Commission to adjudicate on alleged breaches of the code.
“Tasmanians would think it perfectly reasonable for alleged breaches of the code to be independently investigated.
“Today the Premier has sent the message that he is prepared to let his members get away with anything.”
