Hobart home security warning ahead of show public holiday
With the Royal Hobart Show Day holiday approaching, and many taking the opportunity to have a four day long weekend, Tasmanians are being urged to ensure their home and contents are secure and safe from theft, with new research showing almost a quarter of people are leaving their homes vulnerable to theft.
RACT Insurance CEO Trent Sayers said statewide claim figures for 2017 also revealed a 35 per cent increase in theft related claims on motor and home policies compared to the previous year.
“In May we saw the highest number of new theft claims that RACT Insurance has seen in over three years,” Mr Sayers said.
“These figures, combined with our new market research which shows 21 per cent of Tasmanians don’t fully lock their homes when they leave home, make for some worrying statistics.”
Mr Sayers said holiday periods were a prime time for burglars and thieves, so it was vital to ensure your property was secure when you leave the house.
“Prevention is still the simplest way to ensure your home is safe during holiday breaks,” he said.
“There are a number of safety tips for all home owners to consider before they pack up and hit the open road, such as making your home look occupied, installing window locks and alarm systems, deadlocking all doors, windows, gates and sheds and garages, telling neighbours how long you’re away for and not advertising your trip on social media.
“Our research also shows that 67 per cent of Tasmanians, including 81 per cent of those aged over 60, look after their neighbours’ homes and vice versa.
“This is a great way to provide peace of mind that your property is safe while you’re away.
“We would also recommend checking your home and contents as well as shacks and recreational equipment such as boats, bikes and jet skis, are all appropriately covered by your insurance policies.
“Holidays should be a time to relax, without the constant worry of your home and contents being secure.”
