LOCAL GOVERNMENT CODE OF CONDUCT PANEL FINDS CR KING BREACHED CODE OF CONDUCT

MARRA (Meander Area Residents and Ratepayers Association) president Ms Bodhi McSweeney said today that the forced public apology to be made by Councillor Tanya King today, was way overdue.

“MARRA members feel vindicated in complaining about the outrageous personal remarks made by Councillor King”

“The findings of the Code of Conduct Panel against Cr King speak for themselves”

Quote from Code of Conduct findings below:

The “panel has determined the following sanction in accordance with the Section 28Z1 (2) of the local government Act 1959.

– Cr King be cautioned against making inappropriate public statements which may cause offence or embarrassment to any individual or community group” and

– Cr King be required to make the following apology at the first available Meander Valley Council meeting, which should be written into the Council minutes”

“To members of MARRA Inc: “I sincerely and unreservedly apologise to members of MARRA Inc for any offence or embarrassment that my comments at the Meander valley Council meeting held on the 15 November 2016, may have caused them. Cr King.”

“Cr King’s remarks were deeply insulting to our membership of over 70 local residents whom are determined to ensure that our local school is returned to the community for community purposes,“ said Ms McSweeney

“Cr King’s remarks have only served to harden our resolve to regain the school and have confirmed our suspicions that the Council has not dealt with our community in proper way.

“Our local school should never have been handed over to a faith-based so called drug rehabilitation centre located smack bang in the middle of our village.

“MARRA holds serious concerns about the lack of qualifications and experience of the proponents of Teen Challenge to control the inmates or rehabilitate them.

“Teen Challenge views drug and alcohol addiction, gambling and sexual addiction (including homosexual behaviour) as compulsive deviant behaviours that are sins, and that hours of prayer will cure them.

“There is not a qualification or professional amongst them (Teen Challenge crew) and Councillor King could do well to have a good look at the people she is blindly supporting, rather than insulting the community that she is supposed to represent. Her comments indicate a total disregard for the feelings of a large portion of the Meander community with no consideration for problems they might face if the Teen Challenge proposal were to go ahead.

“Cr King doesn’t live in Meander, our members do and the overwhelming majority of the Meander residents do not want this experiment in our midst,” concluded Ms McSweeney
