Mental health support groups are scrambling to deal with a spike in demand they attribute to the same-sex marriage postal vote.
ReachOut, Beyondblue and Headspace have reported increased need for their services since the campaign began in August. Former Australian of the Year Patrick McGorry said mental health bodies “are hearing a lot from LGBTIQ people that this is reviving traumatic experiences, particularly from their school years”, while ReachOut chief executive Jono Nicholas said “Australia will be counting the cost of the postal survey for many years to come, and not just to the budget”.
