Controversial changes to media ownership laws have passed the Senate after the government secured support from the Nick Xenophon Team.
Restrictions on media companies owning more than two broadcast mediums in the same city will be scrapped, as will rules preventing TV channels broadcasting to more than 75 per cent of the population. In return for the NXT’s support, the government will introduce a $60 million fund for small, independent and regional outlets, while Pauline Hanson’s One Nation supported the package in exchange for an inquiry into the ABC’s competitive neutrality. Independent Senator Jacqui Lambie said the ABC inquiry was “an absolute disgrace” supported by “a disgusting bunch of individuals”.
