The government’s determination to promote coal-fired power as a solution to Australia’s energy shortage has drawn it into a war of words with an unlikely critic.

AGL chief executive Andy Vesey publicly dismissed Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s proposal that the Liddell power plant in rural New South Wales run for “at least” five years past its scheduled 2022 closing date. Taking to Twitter, Vesey corrected comments by former resources minister Matt Canavan and former prime minister Tony Abbott that AGL was “no longer getting out of coal”, saying that AGL is “committed to the closure of the Liddell power station in 2022” and that “keeping old coal plants open won’t deliver the reliable, affordable energy our customers need”.
