New President ALGWA Tasmania

Following the recent Annual General Meeting of the Tasmanian Division of the Australian Local Government Women’s Association Alderman Debra Thurley from the Clarence City Council was elected President.

Alderman Debra Thurley was first elected to the Clarence City Council in October of 2014. Previously Alderman Thurley had worked within State Government 5 years, Local Government 10 years and was an Officer within the State Parliament 3 years providing Executive Assistance to the Members of Pembroke and Rumney. During this time Alderman Thurley continued expanding her education achieving a Masters of Employment Relations (formerly Industrial Relations) from Griffith University in 2015.

In her new additional role as President of ALGWA (Australian Local Government Women’s Association) Tasmania, Alderman Thurley wants to strengthen the position and numbers of women around the State’s Council Chambers particularly in light of the Local Government elections at the end of 2018. Alderman Thurley in bringing her business principle skills to the group will be committed to engaging all current and former Councillors by the active promotion of increasing numbers of women to the decision making tables in our State.

Engendering inclusive Councils where a full range of opinions is sought, respected and considered in decision-making is Alderman Thurley’s aim.
“We will we work towards increasing the representation of women in Local Government as elected members, Deputy Mayors and Mayors but also as Senior Management and Professionals employed within the Local Government sector”. Alderman Thurley said.
