Groom late to the party on critical tourism infrastructure funding

 Hodgman Government playing catch-up on critical future tourism infrastructure
The Liberal Government is once again playing catch up with Labor policy, with a belated commitment to tourism infrastructure.

Labor announced a $50 million commitment to regional tourism infrastructure 18 months ago and fully funded the Tourism Industry Council Future Proofing Our Icons report in our Economic Direction Statement.

Labor Shadow Tourism Minister Scott Bacon said the Liberals were making a habit of plagiarising Labor ideas.

“Matthew Groom – after almost four years in government – has finally woken up to the fact that these important tourism attractions are going to need funding going into the future,” Mr Bacon said.
“The Minister has finally woken up to the fact that by 2020, our state will be in a position to welcome 1.5 million visitors and we need to ensure our key attractions are ready for that inevitability.
“A future Labor Government will ensure that we recognise that kind of growth in tourism numbers and act on it to deal with the inevitable pressure on our existing and ageing tourism infrastructure.
“Now is the time to support income-generating, job-creating projects like the Cradle Mountain Master Plan redevelopment and Maria Island.
“It’s also crucial that we implement a program which delivers important grass roots projects like the $500,000 lighting, footpath and streetscape upgrade for Richmond, the $700,000 Strahan Wharf Tourism Zone and $300,000 for infrastructure on Sarah Island.
“It’s not good enough that the Liberal Government is, after almost four years, only now saying it is starting to act.”
