Everday Tasmanians feature in marriage equality ad campaign
What do a church Minister, a business leader, a couple of farmers and a grandmother have in common? They’re all Tasmanian and they all support marriage equality.
Tasmanians United for Marriage Equality (TUME) today (Friday) launched a campaign featuring Tasmanians from different walks of life talking about why they support marriage equality. The campaign includes a television ad set to air statewide next week, as well as online videos, posters and brochures.
To date, all of the “vote yes” tv advertising has been produced by the national Equality Campaign, making this the first local tv advertising campaign for the “yes” case in Australia.
Long-time Tasmanian marriage equality advocate and spokesperson for TUME, Rodney Croome, said the campaign would complement national activities, but provide a distinctly Tasmanian perspective.
“We wanted to feature everyday people talking directly to their fellow Tasmanians to show that there is support for marriage equality across Tasmanian society and that there are very good, simple reasons to vote ‘yes’.
“We also want to reassure people that the sky won’t fall in if we have marriage equality. Tasmania became a better place when homosexuality was decriminalised twenty years ago and it will be a better place when we have marriage equality.”
The campaign features:
• Reverend Ian Carmichael, Penguin Baptist Church
• Ray Mostogl, business leader, Launceston
• Elsa Schwan, grandmother, Hobart
• Andy and Matt Jackman, dairy farmers, Wynyard
