Cancer research funding announcement

Posted on

Labor Leader Bill Shorten today announced that a Shorten Labor Government will invest $20 million in the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute for research into brain cancer and advanced breast cancer
Senator for Tasmania, Catryna Bilyk, said “Through this announcement, Labor is prioritising research into forms of cancer that have low-survival rates.
“Despite an overall improvement in cancer survival in Australia, there are some forms of cancer that have seen little improvement in survival rates, and there is a need for a strong focus on research into these cancers in particular,” Senator Bilyk said.
Senator Bilyk, a brain cancer survivor, is the co-chair of the Australian Parliament’s Brain Cancer and Tumour Awarness Group (BC&TAG) and chair of a Senate Select Committee that is currently inquiring into research into low-survival-rate cancers.
“I am particularly pleased to see a commitment to more funding for research into brain cancer, something I have long advocated for,” Senator Bilyk said.
“It is a little known fact that brain cancer kills more young Australians under 40 than any other cancer and more Australian children than any other disease.
“I had the privilege of meeting Olivia Newton-John last week in Parliament, and I am inspired by her passion and commitment to cancer research.”
