The Briefing …

Good morning, and welcome to The Briefing.

Six Chinese asylum seekers successfully reached Australian territory by boat, undercutting the Turnbull government’s claims it has “stopped the boats”.

Fairfax reports the Australian Border Force detained the six men and a Papua New Guinean man after they reached Saibai Island in the Torres Strait on August 20. The travellers arrived more than a week before immigration minister Peter Dutton boasted to media on Monday that “we’ve not had a successful boat now in well over 1000 days”. Five of the men have been sent back to China, while one Chinese national and the Papua New Guinean man were charged with breaching migration law and remain in custody in Cairns.
