An asylum seeker on Manus Island has been found dead in an apparent suicide, according to local authorities.
Iranian man Hamed Shamshiripour, 31, was found in a forest near the East Lorengau transit centre, where refugees from the closing Manus compound have been moved. In June 2016, the Guardian reported that Shamshiripour was beaten and jailed after suffering a severe mental health episode. In January, Hamed was reportedly wandering the streets of Lorengau township in a state of profound mental anguish.
